SMU Men's Golf Program Sanctioned Over NCAA Violations

DALLAS (CBSDFW) - On the heels of the NCAA coming down on the SMU Men's basketball program and coach Larry Brown, the SMU Men's Golf program has also been hit with sanctions and penalties for recruiting and unethical conduct.

According to the NCAA, the former Golf coach committed recruiting violations by having "impermissible contact with 10 prospects and seven parents of prospects over the course of 10 months." The coach also "offered university merchandise and golf equipment to prospects at a significantly reduced price," along with not consulting with the school's compliance staff.

In addition, the NCAA has ordered the "disassociation of a booster" due to contact with nine golf prospects and the fact that he facilitated contact between the former golf coach and the prospects and their families.

The NCAA as imposed the following penalties for the Men's golf program, including: 3 years probation; $5,000 fine; 2015-16 postseason ban;  3-year prohibition of apparel and merchandise sales by the coaching staff to men's golf prospects.
