Smartphone Apps Helping Ease Pain Of Regret
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Ever send a text message you wish you shouldn't have or place a phone call when you've had a few too many?
A couple smart phone apps could help ease the regret.
A new app for the iPhone, called Quimby, allows users to set a time when a message, a picture or a conversation will self-destruct.
Both the user and sender must have a Quimby account for it to work.
"I can't really see why somebody should get to hold on to something you said forever just because you sent it to them," said Fort Worth resident Ember Lefever. "I think it's a good idea."
"A lot of people do stuff like text things they regret, especially when they've been drinking," 24-year-old Ashley Wofford said.
According to a recent study, by Pew Research Center, one in ten people between the ages of 14 and 24 have sent a sexually suggestive picture by text message.
Quimby now claims to help users practice 'safe sexting' but Match.com relationship expert Whitney Casey doesn't recommend it.
"Let's talk about the fact that you are taking suggestive pictures and sending them to a potential date, this does not bode well for your dating life with them," she explained. "Why are you making that call to begin with, or why are you sending that picture to begin with?"
Quimby isn't alone in the world of dating apps, others like 'Drunk Dial No' let users hide certain contacts before a night of drinking to prevent any texts or phone calls they may regret later.
"Especially the dating scene, especially, we need it!" Wofford said, "I do drink, and I have done that a lot!"
"I think you need to go back to dating boot camp if you need to use these apps," Casey said, "recipe for disaster, not a good cocktail."
Both apps are available on iTunes for 99 cents.
