Skyline Alumni Collecting Money For Rape Victim
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The brutal rape and stabbing of a 17-year-old Skyline High School student paints a grim picture of the evil humans are capable of.
"Really upset me. Made me mad that somebody was doing this to someone," said Sandy Wilson.
But it also reveals the compassion of a community ignited by a desire to help.
"It's more of a feeling. I live four blocks away from the young lady," said Martin Martinez.
Martinez, a spray paint artist with his own company, called Cosmo Universal Art, wanted to do something for the girl.
"It's hard to see such tragedy happen and not feel something," he said.
So, Martinez connected with Sandy Wilson, the president of the Skyline Alumni Association. Wilson graduated with the first class in 1972.
"We have gotten so many calls that people want to help out. We want to make sure she's taken care of," Wilson said.
So, Martinez set up shop on Dallas' West End near the Spaghetti Warehouse and sold his spray paintings for three hours at $25 a piece.
Rebecca Ruiz bought one for her mother. "It was really pretty. And I thought if it helps in any way. Might as well help out," Ruiz said.
Then, Martinez donated all of the profits for the night to the Skyline Alumni Association.
The group says 100-percent of money raised will go to the girl for whatever she needs.
Enrique Carranza, General Manager at the Spaghetti Warehouse, gave. "It kind of hit close to home. So, we're trying to do whatever we can to help out," Carranza said.
None of them have even met the girl. They're just hoping to paint a better future for her.
