Shooting Inspired Shy Blakeman To Play Music
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Country music artist Shy Blakeman is the winner of a Billy Bob's Texas recording contest, but he never would have been playing music if it were not for a near-death experience in Dallas. In 2003, Blakeman was robbed at gunpoint after playing a show at Poor David's Pub. While struggling with the robber, the gun fired and Blakeman was shot in the face.
"It was a blessing in disguise," Blakeman told CBS 11 News. "That next morning, I woke up and I was like, 'Wow, I almost lost my life.' And I literally thought I was a goner that night." But that botched robbery made the indecisive and insecure country musician see a clear path for his future. "This is what I'm doing for the rest of my life."
Blakeman lists Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Billy Preston and The Rolling Stones among his many influences -- and he's honored to now be playing with some of the greatest names in the business. "I feel prepared, but still, I'm very nervous and confident and insecure and happy and excited. It's just a whole range. It changes every day," he said.
Blakeman just performed Wednesday at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic at Billy Bob's Texas, and will be back there on Friday night for another live show. But he stopped by the CBS 11 News studio on Friday morning to preview a brand new song.
