Sheriff's: Jail Escapee On North Texas Crime Spree
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Parker County Jail inmate who escaped a work detail, is believed to have broken into five buildings and tied a man up in his home.
Donald McFaden Orange II walked away from the job detail, at the Precinct 1 maintenance yard near Veal Station Road, Friday afternoon. Officials say he stole a set of keys off a key board and got away in a county pickup truck.
That same day a woman in Jack County spotted him climbing through the window of her home. She called a relative who spotted Orange again, coming out of another home wearing new clothes. Realizing he had been seen, Orange ditched the county truck he was driving and headed into the brush on foot.
Jack County Sheriff Melvin Mayo said his deputies set up a perimeter covering at least 10 square miles. Two dog teams and two choppers joined the search.
"We started stopping people that were leaving there to make sure we searched the vehicle, make sure he wasn't in the vehicle," Mayo said.
The perimeter broke down around 2:30 a.m. Five hours later Mayo said a call came in that a barn had been burglarized 10 miles away, and a child motorcycle was gone. Deputies moved to the area and discovered another home had been broken into, and a first aid kit was used.
As deputies were combing that location, Orange was believed to already be several miles to the north. Edwin Stephan said he walked into his kitchen to find Orange standing there, holding a shotgun.
"Just kinda seemed unreal at first you know,"Stephan said. "This doesn't happen."
Stephan said Orange used a lead rope, phone cable and extension cord to tie him to a kitchen chair. He said Orange was in the house up to an hour, resting, eating and telling him about his escape.
"I mean he made it so easy to trust him and not feel threatened," Stephan said. "Never at any point did I think he was going to pull that trigger."
10 minutes after Orange drove away in his 1992 blue and white Ford pickup, Stephan said he hopped out to the road and flagged down a neighbor to untie him.
Investigators are still not sure where Orange got the shotgun he used at the home.
The U.S. Marshals and Texas Rangers are now assisting with the hunt. A convenience store clerk in Archer City south of Wichita Falls reported that Orange was in the store at 3:30 Monday morning.
Orange was originally arrested late last year on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
The escaped inmate is a white male, stands 6'1" and weighs around 165 pounds. He has dark hair, green eyes, a tattoo of a woman on his back and a second tattoo of a mummy on his right leg.
