Sheriff Says He Will Not Enforce Tougher Gun Laws
PLANO (CBS 11 NEWS) - Collin County Sheriff Terry Box is making it clear that he is not a fan of tougher limits on firearms. The sheriff, who oversees the public safety of a half million residents, is also taking it a step further. Box says he will not enforce new federal gun laws, if they are passed.
"I would not enforce any unconstitutional laws or anything that would affect the persons right to the second amendment, to keep and bear arms," says Box.
Sheriff Box admits he isn't certain any proposed gun law change would be a constitutional violation. But he stands firm that his main duty is to uphold the law.
"If there are laws that I feel and can prove are unconstitutional, we won't enforce those rules in Collin County," Box explains. "And I think I have the power to do that."
In downtown Plano, business owners and workers offered their views on the sheriff's stand.
"As an official, he does have to do what the laws are demanding, but I think this is a court issue, because it does affect our second amendment rights," says Plano business owner, Mona Crider.
However, business owner Julie Higginbotham, says it's the sheriff's duty to uphold all laws.
Most folks told CBS 11 they support the sheriff's stand on gun restrictions, but are uneasy about his talk of not enforcing laws.
