Severe Storms Before More Mild Weather
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Have you enjoyed the past few days of sunny skies and mild temperatures? Well, the good news is that we can expect more of the same this weekend. The bad news is that first, we need to get ready for some more storms. There is a severe weather threat in the forecast for late Thursday afternoon and evening.
The main players for this storm scenario are the dry line, a strong cold front and a low pressure system.
While the majority of the threat sits north of the Red River, the dry line will likely touch off a few storms along and east of Interstate-35E, from Dallas to McKinney to Sherman. But these storms will have a difficult time holding together Thursday afternoon as they move eastward into a fairly strong cap.
However, as the cold front approaches on Thursday evening, there will likely be enough dynamics to force a break in the cap and allow strong-to-severe storms to develop rapidly. This will likely occur along the Red River from Sherman to Paris, and down toward Greenville to Sulphur Springs.
The atmosphere is strongly sheared. Therefore, storm towers will likely become rotating super cells, and they tend to produce a full gamut of potentially severe weather. Downburst winds, frequent lightning, hail, tornadoes – all are possible with these Thursday night storms.
The timing of these storms looks to be after 8:00 p.m. Thursday through midnight, with storms then exiting North Texas quickly as we head into Friday.
The Main Street Fort Worth Arts Festival begins Thursday but, with storms primarily to the north and east, should not be impacted much by rainfall or severe weather. Breezy, cooler conditions will take over DFW by Friday morning's commute. Sunny, dry weather will continue through the weekend, with comfortable temperatures in the 70s on both Friday and Saturday. Wind and humidity return on Sunday, with highs in the 80s.
