Several Inches Of Rain Causes Flooding In Denton

DENTON (CBS 11 NEWS) - Parts of Denton County saw nearly four inches of rain Friday, and residents are bracing for more as the city gets ready for its big arts and jazz festival.

Rain is the last thing organizers of the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival want to see, but the show must go on.

Right alongside the event in Quakertown Park, is a drainage ditch, which looks more like a river after the recent rains.

As of Friday afternoon, there were no flooding issues at the park, but there were in other parts of the County.

Some residents say earlier in the day, a drainage ditch at Denton Street and Panhandle Street overflowed, and water went into the street.

Denton Police say they've had to shut down the following two roads because of minor flooding: Blagg at Mayhill and Hickory Creek Road west of the railroad tracks and east of Country Club Road.

Residents say they haven't seen the drainage ditches fill up in quite awhile.

"The water was going over the side and onto the other side of the bridge. It was overflowing. It was pretty bad actually," said Denton resident John Mouser. He says it's been seven years since he's seen anything like that before in Denton.

The weather has also impacted bus service by the Denton County Transportation Authority.
