Sentencing Continues For Mom Who Glued Child
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The defense will present evidence on Wednesday in one of the worst cases of child abuse in Dallas County. Elizabeth Escalona pleaded guilty in July to injury of a child. She admitted to beating her 2-year-old daughter and gluing her hands to a wall. The 23-year-old mother now faces sentencing for the crime, and prosecutors are seeking a 45-year prison term.
According to police, Escalona lost her temper in September 2011 over potty training problems. That sparked an attack on Jocelynn Cedillo. Pictures introduced in court show the child with bruises and scrapes from her head to her feet. Some of her hair was pulled out. Her hands had been glued to a wall and her eyes were also partially glued shut. Records also indicate that Cedillo was also kicked in the stomach and hit with a milk jug.
The child survived the attack, but a doctor from Children's Medical Center called it one of the worst cases of child abuse that she had ever seen.
It is not known if Escalona will take the stand on Wednesday. However, her mother testified on Monday, suggesting probation for her daughter. The prosecution grilled the elder Escalona, who said that Elizabeth was "not a monster," and was simply overwhelmed into making bad choices.
Another witness testified that the defendant was a gang member in West Dallas, and had been sent to juvenile dentention in the past for harrassing her mother.
