Scrap Metal Plant Fire Contained In Waxahachie
WAXAHACHIE (CBSDFW.COM) - A scrap metal plant caught fire Saturday at 7 p.m. in Waxahachie. It happened at Oak Cliff Recycling, located at Brown Industrial Rd and I-35.
Ferris, Palmer and Bristol Fire Departments and Emergency Service District No. 6 provided tanker trucks to shuttle water to the fire engines on site. Red Oak, Midlothian and Ovilla Fire Departments also provided mutual aid. Firefighters said pieces of metal and debris waiting to be recycled surrounding the building caught fire. Crews battling the blaze had problems getting enough water supply to fight the fire. Since the fire happened in mostly an industrial area, responders drove used their trucks to drive water in and out to fight the fire. Dry grass near the plant also caught fire, which made it more difficult to contain once the sun set.
Fire crews created fire barriers to contain the fire. The fire was largely under control by 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Crews have wrapped up but continue to monitor the situation. A representative from the company remaining on the premises after crews leave Sunday and overnight as a precaution.
No injuries were reported.
The plant has been in operation for more than 25 years. It collects and processes steel, rebar, iron, aluminum, brass and copper. Owners of the company said there aren't any hazardous materials on site so residents shouldn't worry about ingesting toxic air.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
