School Districts Considering Carbon Monoxide Detectors After Leak At DISD School

Now that school is back in session, more districts are considering putting in carbon monoxide detectors after a leak at Dallas's Lakewood Elementary back in March.
Fort Worth ISD plans to install them in all their schools in a couple weeks. Denton ISD is looking into it as well. Keller ISD is one district that already has detectors in all its schools.
"It's just something we decided to do to keep all our kids safe. Students could be especially susceptible to that kind of thing, and we wanted the extra precaution," says communications coordinator Bryce Neiman.
Students were forced to evacuate Lakewood Elementary in Dallas when the carbon monoxide leak occurred. Deb Stuart has a child at Lakewood, and remembers the day.
"Kids were complaining of headaches and they were vomiting. We parents were all talking about it and everyone was chiming in saying their kid had a headache."
Parents installed a carbon monoxide detector in Lakewood following that leak. It is currently the only school in Dallas ISD with a detector. The district says detectors will be installed in all Dallas schools starting later this fall.
