School Bus Driver Saves Child's Life
MCKINNEY (CBSFDW.COM) - One school bus driver's ability to stay calm during a stressful situation saved a child's life in McKinney.
McKinney ISD bus driver Linda Wilson performed CPR on 14-year-old passenger Dakota English when she had a seizure and stopped breathing. English suffers from scoliosis, and has only one kidney, which is polycystic. She is unable to walk or talk and is deaf. Because of English's medical and physical problems, the seizure was not unexpected.
English is a regular passenger on Wilson's bus for special need's children. A former emergency medical technician, Wilson was ready when English stopped breathing suddenly. She immediately started chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
"I started a series of chest compressions," Wilson said. "After the third round, Dakota just gasped, and that was music to my ears."
The bus driver revived the child, while paramedics were en route to the scene.
The young girl's family has expressed their gratitude for the bus driver who went into overdrive, above and beyond her daily duties to save a life.
"Oh, I can't even explain how I feel, and how appreciative I am for what she did," said English's grandmother, Betty Cox.
There are 140 bus drivers for McKinney ISD; none are required to have CPR training.
"The whole time I was working on her, I was also praying," said Wilson. "I'm so happy she's still here".
