Sandie's Arts Blog: The Hip Hop Cowboy's Rodeo & More
Heehaw! Let's start off with some roping, riding and rapping first! The first ever Hip Hop Cowboy's Spring Rodeo pulls into town at the Mesquite Rodeo this Saturday night -- for one night only. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the family-friendly event that brings the best of the cowboy and rodeo experience with some great hip hop, rap, blues and house music sound.
Award winning bull rider Craig Jackson is also a rapper and thanks to native Texan and CEO Damon Laffell, from Hip Hop Cowboy, he can combine his two passions and entertain the crowd, along with well known rapper Juvenile and others, for a rodeo like you've never seen before.
The organization also just performed at the NBA All Star game in Orlando and hopes the success of Saturday night's show will make it a regular event here in North Texas.
OTHER WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT
The Tony Award winning 'In the Heights' has just opened at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The passionate tale of family, young love, power struggles and dreams combines all forms of dance including salsa, mambo and hip hop to a rousing musical score that has made it a huge crowd pleaser on Broadway. It continues at the Winspear Opera House through Sunday 3/25. Next week we will check out a mural made by local students to pay tribute to the show as well as talk to one of the young stars.
Also on stage - Million Dollar Quartet continues at the Music Hall at Fair Park as part of the 72nd season of our Dallas Summer Musicals. Don't miss the powerful and fun look at one amazing night in rock and roll history when Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash all got together to jam at famed Sun Studios in Memphis. Denton native (and KRLD's very own Krista Villarreal's brother!) Christopher Ryan Grants stars (he also starred in the show on Broadway) - it's a night you won't forget!
Erin Go Braugh! It's St. Patrick's Day weekend and you know how North Texans loves to turn green so make sure you check out the many events going on all weekend long especially the popular annual parade now reinstated - thanks to Mavs owner Mark Cuban - once again on Greenville in Dallas. Watch the intake of green beer - drink and drive responsively - and have fun as you search for that elusive pot of old!
See you next week...center stage!
