SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A convenience store where San Antonio police have been called more than 600 times to respond to criminal activity is closing after the city threatened store owners with a lawsuit under the state's nuisance code.

At least two shootings — one of them fatal — have occurred at a Handy Stop store on San Antonio's east side since April. The 600 police calls over four years included prostitution, narcotics and assaults.

The store recently was cited city's Dangerous Assessment Response Team for health and building violations and owners were given 60 days to comply. Deputy City Attorney Joe Nino says owners agreed to close by October.

One of the store's managers told television station KSAT the city demanded he hire a security officer, an expense he couldn't afford.
