Same-Sex Marriage Supporters Celebrate Supreme Court Decisions

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An estimated 400 supporters of same-sex marriage gathered in celebration Wednesday night around the Legacy of Love monument in Oak Lawn.

Earlier in the day the United States Supreme Court struck down a provision of a federal law denying married same-sex couples federal tax, health, and pension benefits.

"It means we are one step closer to equality for all Americans," said Ally Greer at the Dallas rally.

The Rev. Dr. Dawson Taylor of the Cathedral of Hope Church said the ruling is a step in the right direction, adding he hopes the State of Texas will now follow. Same-sex marriage is currently not allowed in the state.

"I think this is a major step forward," he said. "Now I believe the wind is at our back and we are moving forward."

However, at First Baptist Dallas, Pastor Robert Jeffress said he found the ruling to be disappointing.

The Dallas pastor is an outspoken supporter of marriage being defined as between a man and a woman.

Jefress said, "I believe the Supreme Court today caved to political correctness."
