Sam Will Try To Paint Odds With Cowboys Try Out

IRVING , Texas (105.3 THE FAN) - Michael Sam never earned a draft-worthy grade from the Cowboys personnel department. But the accomplishments of the NFL's first openly gay player may win him a spot on the Dallas practice squad.
Sam is planning to be in Dallas on Wednesday and if he passes a physical could join the Cowboys' practice squad.
Sam made it to the final round of cuts in St. Louis before being released on Saturday. The seventh-round pick made plays for the Rams in the preseason just as he did at Missouri, when a season ago he was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
There has been speculation that Sam was being blackballed by so the NFL due to his sexuality. There will be more speculation that Sam-as-a-Cowboy is a marketing ploy. In Dallas that can become a non-issue if Sam wins a chance to develop for a team in desperate need of pass-rushing.
"I don't want to talk about available players," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday morning when asked about Sam. "Not necessarily a player, but just available players. It's not good strategy. We've got competition out here. We've got a lot of reasons for not talking about maybes."
But now Sam's planned visit makes this more than a "maybe."
