Sam Hurd's Cousin Gets 8 Years In Drug Case
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - A co-conspirator and cousin of former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd has received 8 years in prison for his role in trying to set up a drug-distribution ring.
Jesse Tyrone Chavful, Hurd's cousin from San Antonio, was sentenced Wednesday in Dallas federal court.
He had previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine with intent to distribute.
Chavful admitted to trying to buy cocaine and marijuana at Hurd's request last year, after Hurd had been arrested and released pending trial.
Hurd has pleaded guilty to trying to buy cocaine and marijuana. He was arrested outside a Chicago-area steakhouse two years ago while on the Bears, after allegedly accepting a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover officer.
Another defendant in the case, Toby Lujan, 28, is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2014.
Hurd is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 13th. He faces a maximum statutory sentence of not less than 10 years or up to life in prison and a fine of up to $10 million.
