Salt Crystal Lamps Can Help Ease Stress

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Massages. Facials. Pedicures. Americans have all kinds of ways to cope with the hustle and bustle of life. But a special lamp is helping to reduce stress for some North Texans. "It's very relaxing, soothing," said office manager Rebecca Buckner. "It clears your mind, your chest, it opens up everything."

Buckner's day is filled with stress and payroll deadlines. To find her inner peace, Buckner surrounds herself with calming music, cool air and several glowing salt crystal lamps. "After I do payroll on Monday, I come sit in here, and it's really, really relaxing," Buckner explained. "It takes away all of my stress."

A microbiologist at the University of California conducted a study, determining that salt crystal lamps actually increase the number of negative ions in the air. Those negative ions could kill off bacteria in the air, which in turn could enhance the the body's immune system and increase the level of serotonin in the bloodstream.

"I don't see it's harmful to anyone," said Dr. Msonthi Levine. "If that's the way you want to find your peace and happiness, to meditate and get your body ready for the next day, that's what I recommend."

Buckner has committed herself to salt crystal healing, saying that just 15 to 30 minutes of meditation helps her cope with the pressures of life.
