Roy's Fan SB49 Overview: This Group is Awesome
The trip out to the Super Bowl, without question, is the thing I looked forward to most this year - even when it means working long hours on very little sleep.
That's because, for what might be the only time all year, a group of our Fan personalities get to travel together and hang out together practically day and night.
Now, I wouldn't advocate planning a weekend for you and your co-workers at the office to be couped-up together in a log cabin somewhere...Chances are, there's someone you work with that really gets on your nerves. But for me, in all honesty, I couldn't have imagined being able to take a trip with 14 co-workers, and genuinely enjoy being around each and every one of them.
Shan and RJ - What can I say? If you listen to the show, you know I take a lot of heat from these two. What you might not know is, when the microphones go off, these guys are some of the most generous, easy-going people I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Shan can start a conversation with anyone - and he's always the first one to call for a round for everyone at the table. RJ is our tour guide - there's hardly a city in America that he doesn't know of some hole-in-the-wall restaurant, and he never fails to point us in the right direction. Love these two boys.
Gavin Dawson - Nothing is funnier to me than deadpan-Dawson. His delivery alone is enough to make me smile, but throw in his down-to-earth attitude and love for smoked meats, and you could fool me into thinking we were long lost brothers.
Mike Bacsik - bigger sports nerd than you think...But the best thing about Bacsik is, despite all the inside knowledge he has about baseball or basketball, he'll never talk down to you when it comes to a sports argument. Just don't say ANYTHING negative about the Mavericks, or he might kill you.
Chris Arnold - Always friendly. Always positive. Always energetic. He's up for anything, and has stories from everyone and everywhere. This is my 2nd Super Bowl, and I'm pretty sure Chris is on his 22nd. You want to find out how to make it in this business - Chris is the guy you talk to.
Jeff Cavanaugh - Who doesn't love Cavanaugh? The funny man of the station, there's never a dull moment when Jeffrey's in tow. I used to not be able to tell if he was being serious or not when he made a controversial statement or suggestion. Now I know the answer - he's always being serious. And that makes him even better.
Skin Wade - The smooth-talking Mavs expert who combines wit with an eclectic knowledge of old-school hip hop. He won't miss a chance to rip on anyone in the group, but always does it in a way that has the victim laughing along too. It's a gift.
Ben Rogers - How do you know who's a good teammate? It's the guy who's willing to dive headfirst into the restroom to save you from being left behind. Ben did that. He's also got a hell of a singing voice, and I can't tell you what those glasses have done for his dating prospects. Nobody gives support to the rest of the crew like Ben Rogers.
KT - Fun fact: KT and I started our broadcasting career at KNTU together doing the 7-minute Sports Update. Somehow, we didn't kill ourselves, and eventually found ourselves back together again at the Fan. I consider KT to be my first great friend in the radio business.
Jesse Holley - Clearly the most stylish of the bunch, Jesse is as kind as he is competitive. In one day, Jesse found a way to shoot some hoops, attempt to intercept a pass, and make a solid form tackle on a guy who outweighed him by 30 pounds. And no, he didn't scuff up his Jordans either.
The guys behind the scenes on the trip - Asst PD Tim Collins, Engineer Ted Nichols-Payne, and Web expert Jeff Burkett - have all been terrific as well. From setting us up at Radio Row, to helping us grab great guests, to bringing all of our social outlets - twitter, facebook, webcam, etc - together for our listeners to enjoy, there's nothing I would trade this week, with this group of guys, for. And it's only just begun. We hope you'll come along for the ride.
