ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a simple and kind gesture by a North Texas police officer. Now a photo of the moment, posted on social media, is getting widespread praise.
While people around her were coming and going at an Aldi grocery store in Rowlett on Tuesday, a woman and her son held up a sign asking for food.
"When I walked up to her she took the sign she was holding and placed it down by her feet. She was apologetic but said she had no other means to get home or feed herself or child," says Rowlett Police Department Cpl. Vedran Nosic.
The 29-year-old officer ran a background check and noticed the woman had no criminal record. "She wasn't asking for paper money she was asking for food."
So Nosic bought the woman a bag of groceries while a startled customer took a photograph and posted it online.
"Captured the moment basically," says customer Stephanie Shackelford. "I thought I would share that good moment for somebody else."
"I decided to take it upon myself to get them some food," says Nosic, "Most officers would do the same thing I did."
Nosic would rather not get attention for the bag of groceries he bought. But this good cop's been busted for generosity.
"Makes you feel good to help somebody that's why we all joined the police department," says Nosic.
The officer says the woman was traveling through the area searching for house cleaning jobs. He says it's not the first time he's done something like this, it's just the first time he's been exposed.
