Roger Staubach And Drew Pearson Still Best Of Friends

DALLAS (CBS11 SPORTS) - It didn't take long to see the chemistry to come back to life.

When Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson agreed to sit down together for an interview, it turned into the ultimate conversation. The dynamic duo admit they can't remember having ever done an interview together on a local television station since their playing careers ended.

We discussed their magical moments, several of which took place in key moments of Cowboys' games. They say their special connection started before they ever played a game together. Drew tells a story of when Roger (already an established star) went to legendary player personnel director Gil Brandt, and asked for more money for Pearson. That took place in 1973 when Pearson, an undrafted free agent, needed to have more time to workout in preparation of his first training camp.

And who could spend the whole day working out without any funds to pay bills. Staubach says he did it because he knew how special a player Drew was going to be. Roger teases Drew about how he has the same hairdo legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry had. Drew replies, "it wasn't always that way. Please find some pictures of me back in the day when I had a full head of hair."

Clearly, the Hail Mary from the playoff win over the Vikings, remains one of the signature plays in NFL history. Staubach says "that's when we knew we could have a remarkable run as a team."

The men say their friendship isn't based one or two plays, however. It's based on mutual respect. Drew concludes the interview by saying "we don't go out to dinner or hang in the same clubs." Roger responds "we've had dinner a couple times". Drew counters "but we don't hang out in the same clubs."

Rogers wraps it up with "I'm home by 10 while he's still out there."

Two men who combined to make Cowboys folklore continue to prove their bond will always be solid as a rock.
