Rockwall ISD To Discuss Suicide & Depression
ROCKWALL (CBSDFW.COM) - Two recent teen suicides in Rockwall have gotten area schools to start taking action. Officials with the Rockwall Independent School District will meet with community leaders and concerned parents on Tuesday night to discuss what steps could be taken to stop the effects of teenage depression.
The school district held a similar forum in the fall, but attendance was low -- only about seven people were present. But this time, the district moved to the meeting to a bigger location, because they expect many parents to arrive after the recent suicides shook the community.
High school freshman Hanna Clark committed suicide on April 25. She was just 15 years old and a member of her school's volleyball team. Then, on May 22, Utley Middle School eighth-grader Brianna Escobedo took her own life as well. Both girls fatally shot themselves.
"In light of the tragedies in our community, it was the perfect timing for a conversation," said Sheri S. Fowler, executive director of communications for the Rockwall ISD. "The recent events just brought it to light, made it timely, made it an urgent conversation."
Tuesday's forum will be hosted by the Rockwall ISD, and is called "Just Talk About It: An Open Conversation About Depression & Suicide." It begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwall High School Performing Arts Center, located at 1201 T.L. Townsend Drive in Rockwall. A family counselor and a social worker are expected to be among those speaking. The forum is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
