Dallas Police Kill Robbery Suspect
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An attempted robbery at a tobacco shop in Irving led to a deadly shooting involving police officers in Dallas. The incident started at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, and when all was done, one of the suspects was pronounced dead.
According to police investigators, those suspects tried to rob a store in Irving, but they were interrupted by a customer.
Pastor W.K. McDonald was leaving Deez Smoke 4-Less store as it was closing. McDonald frequently checks in on area neighbors and businesses, and was just getting into his car when two men came up and threatened him with a gun. "They just had it kind of under their jacket and said, 'Give me the keys,'so I give them the keys."
Police were able to locate the stolen car because of a LoJack security system device that had been installed in the vehicle. The security device allows authorities to track a vehicle when it has been reported stolen or missing.
McDonald's stolen car was found in the 3000 block of Lombardy Lane in Dallas. Police officers did stop the car, but the situation turned violent.
When officers closed in they say the driver---identified as 22-year-old Luis Anthony Escalante--refused to give up. "The driver turns to his accomplice and says, 'I'm not going back to jail,' throws the vehicle in reverse and in a very deliberate action speeds the vehicle backwards," Dallas police Lieutenant David Pughes told reporters, adding, "There's dashcam video of the incident and it's very apparent that this suspect was willing to do whatever he needed to do to get away and elude the officers." Escalante hit one squad car, and Pughes says dashcam video indicate officers thought one of their own had been dragged along. Three policemen opened fire, striking both men inside the car.
Police identify the second alleged robber as 36-year-old Carlos James Cipriano, who they say has numerous aliases. Irving Police plan to charge him with aggravated robbery.
No police officers were injured during the shooting incident in Dallas. There were also no injuries reported from the original robbery attempt and carjacking in Irving.
