RJ Choppy: Why Did The Rangers Pay Profar?

By RJ Choppy | @rjchoppy

Jurickson Profar proves we're all in the wrong business

Jurickson Profar and the Rangers agreed to a 1 year, $605,000 deal from the Rangers, avoiding arbitration. That is an increase of 18.7%

When was the last time you got an 18.7% raise? Hell, when was the last time you got a 5% raise?

Profar hasn't played in the Major Leagues since September of 2013, has barely played in the Minors since then, yet gets an 18.7% raise?

When was the last time you got a raise for being unproductive for 2 years? We'd be lucky if we still had a job. More than likely is that we'd be 2 jobs down the road.

But Jurickson Profar gets an 18.7% raise, and at his salary rate that's over $100,000 in raises. Look, I like the kid. i think he's been incredibly unlucky. But this isn't a charity case.

I don't blame the Rangers. They were handcuffed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement. They could have gone to arbitration, but they chose this route instead. I can't blame them, and for them $605,000 is relative chump change. Still, something doesn't sit right when a guy who hasn't played in 2 years gets a raise that equals or exceeds most of his fanbase annual compensation.

If you make $100,000, congratulations, you've probably worked very hard to get there.

You're also probably not making much more than $100,000, because you're not an athlete. Profar got a RAISE of over $100,000 and its all because of a pre-negotiated deal with the Union and Ownership.

This is a #Sports if I've ever seen one...
