RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - People in Richardson have another layer of protection against thieves this holiday season.

Police officers are offering another layer of security while you travel with the 'House Watch' program.

The program is offered year-round, but Richardson police said that it is mainly utlilized during the holidays.

If you fill out an application online, Volunteers in Police Service or VIPS will drive by your home while you are away and monitor your locks and windows.

Officers said they use two to six VIPS each day that will perform the checks among other duties they have while assisting patrol officers.

"I think that is a great idea and it gives people a little peace of mind while they are traveling and for sure the extra security," said Richardson resident, Robert Tobey.
