Richardson Launches App For Mobile Devices
RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - The City of Richardson introduced its own app for mobile devices on Wednesday.
"Richardson is proud to launch one of the first municipal mobile applications in the region," said Mayor Bob Townsend in a statement. "The whole world is moving to mobile platforms, and our residents expect to be able to connect with us in that way as well. Because of that, we wanted to be among the municipal innovators in mobile applications, and we hope our residents find it to be a useful tool and another reason to love living here."
Programmers designed and created the MyRichardson app internally and worked with city services to integrate it with existing systems.
One of the key features of the app is the ability report issues to city officials. The program includes a photo sharing option with GPS capabilities. If a resident were to see something of concern -- like a dangerous pothole or a loose animal -- then the situation can be reported using the app. Users are able to attach a photo of the problem and show the exact location, helping officials easily find and address the issue.
Once an issue has been submitted, users can then track the status of those issues until they have been resolved.
The app also provides city news and event information, quick access to city department websites, and contact information for city departments.
The MyRichardson app is just one part of the city's increased focus on mobile technology. Officials recognized the push toward handheld gadgets in 2010 and Richardson redesigned the city's website in March 2012 with mobile devices in mind. The upgraded website includes menus and interface elements that are easier for smartphone and tablet users to navigate.
Richardson has always been on the leading edge of technology. The city's website first went online in 1991 and was the first municipal site in Texas, possibly the third municipal website in the world.
