Rice Accepts Invitation To Address SMU Graduates
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It sounds like two schools from the old days of the Southwest Conference -- Rice and SMU. Instead, it's about a very special day for graduates at Southern Methodist University.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will deliver SMU's commencement address on Saturday, May 12. The school made the announcement Wednesday morning. "She is well-suited to provide compelling and wide-ranging perspectives as SMU's commencement speaker," said SMU president R. Gerald Turner, through a news release.
SMU anticipates awarding 2,100 undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. Rice will also receive an honorary degree during her visit. The ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m. at Moody Coliseum on the SMU campus.
Condoleezza Rice is the second woman and the first African American woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State. She chairs the Board of Advisers of the Bush Institute. The institute is part of the George W. Bush Presidential Center on the SMU campus.
