RG3 Absent From Redskins Rookie Camp

NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) - Washington Redskins rookie training camp began on Monday. There was one rookie noticeably absent, however, as quarterback Robert Griffin III was not there. But as Brian McIntyre at NFL.com points out, this doesn't make Griffin a "no show" or "holdout." He doesn't have a contract yet.

The Redskins first-round pick said recently that he hoped to get a contract signed in time to make it to D.C. for the rookie reporting date of July 16. But as CBS Sports noted at the time, it's one thing to want a contract and a totally different thing to actually get one, especially when none of the top-eight picks from 2012's NFL Draft have signed yet.

RG3 would probably love nothing more than to be at the Redskins complex, working out and getting ready for the season. But the people with his financial interests in mind aren't going to let him do that until some of the other top picks have signed their contract. That's not a reflection on RG3; he'll get into camp on time (veterans don't report for another week). It's more a warning to fans not to worry about whether or not Griffin is in camp just yet.
