Residents Sick Of Landfill Stinking Up The Place

CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Numerous residents of the River Glen neighborhood who live by DFW Landfill off Hebron Parkway are on the verge of passing out from the nasty smell.
Rotten eggs mixed with stale milk is one way a resident described it. A stench so strong, it's just as bad inside people's homes as outside. The 150 foot tall landfill is filling up so much that homeowners like Angela Broomfield are starting to see the trash piles from their backyards.
"It never has been this close so it is a concern because I have children," said Broomfield. "It smells like week old or 2 week old trash."
The sight of a landfill nearby is something people who bought homes in River Glen knew they would have to deal with. But in recent weeks the filth has creeped closer and homeowners said the smell is overpowering.
"We noticed it in the past only if we stepped outside but now it permeates every room in the house," said Carrollton resident Alan Creel.
Creel and others here have now asked for an investigation by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality into the landfill, which is actually in the city of Lewisville. The city blames the foul odor on recent rains.
"Whenever we get a heavy rainstorm coming through you get run off in the landfill and you get a little bit of shifting on the land of the garbage out there so the scent kicks up," said Matt Martucci, Lewisville Public Information Coordinator.
The city said there's no cause for concern about fumes posing a health hazard.
Residents said a state inspector was onsite meeting with landfill employees recently and an intervention is possible.
