Report: Rangers, D-Backs Among Suitors For Choo
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- If the Rangers are looking to make a splash in free agency this offseason, their options are quickly dwindling.
According to a report by CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Texas and Arizona are among the teams vying for free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, one of the best position players left on the market.
Ken Rosenthal reports that the negotiations have reached a "critical stage".
Outfielders Carlos Beltran, Curtis Granderson, and Jacoby Ellsbury are off the market, leaving few big names on the market. Nelson Cruz, who has spent the last eight years with Texas, also remains available.
Texas has a void in left field, a position manned by David Murphy and Craig Gentry last season. Murphy left in free agency, and Gentry was traded to Oakland for outfielder Michael Choice and infielder Chris Bostick.
General Manager Jon Daniels says Choice, Jim Aducci, Engel Beltre, and possibly Mitch Moreland will compete for time in left field.
Choo appeared in 154 games with Cincinnati last season, hitting .285 with a .423 OBP -- second highest in the National League. The 31-year-old added 21 homeruns and 54 RBIs in his first season with the Reds.
Choo spent the previous six seasons with Cleveland, but was traded prior to the 2013 season in a three-team deal including Arizona.
