Report Focuses On Bus Driver's Actions After Deadly Crash
IRVING (CBS 11 NEWS) - A preliminary report by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) finds driver error may be to blame for the April 11 tour bus crash in Irving that has now claimed three lives.
The report, obtained by CBS 11 News, shows a contributing factor of the crash was that 65-year-old driver Loyd Rieve, failed to stay in a single lane. According to the report, driver inattention and the fact Rieve may have been ill, may have both contributed to the crash.
Rieve told authorities that he possibly could have blacked out right before the crash.
The report also says Rieve wasn't wearing a seat-belt. He and two passengers were ejected fro the bus during the crash, another passenger was partially ejected.
Meantime, Alice Stanley, 83, became the third passenger to die from injuries caused by the crash.
The report details how the bus hit barrels on the right side of the Bush Turnpike, then crossed several lanes and struck a concrete barrier. For several seconds the bus rode on top of the center concrete barrier, and then rolled over onto its right side.
The report says there were no mechanical problems with the bus before the accident.
As CBS 11 previously reported, this is Rieve's second accident behind the wheel of a tour bus. He was accused of running over a Good Samaritan who stopped at an accident scene back in 1998, but he was not charged.
A CBS 11 crew went by Rieve's house in Dallas Monday, but no one answered the door.
At Cardinal Bus Lines in Grand Prairie, where Rieve works, the owner, Mieczyslaw Biran, didn't want talk with us.
The crash has now led to three lawsuits against the bus company.
