IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - At 2:09 p.m. - 51 minutes before the "Dezline'' - we received a text from inside the Cowboys corporate meeting room at Valley Ranch.
"Close enough to cheer,'' the text read, thus confirming the good news: the Dallas Cowboys and receiver Dez Bryant have reached a five-year deal worth $70 million, with a $45 million guaranteed (though more than half of that is a "virtual guarantee, I'm told, meaning $20 million is a signing bonus now and much of it is due next March.)

Without a deal, Bryant would have had to play under the franchise tag of around $12.8 million - a concept that caused him to tell me a month ago of his willingness to sit out 2015 regular-season games in protest.
In his first five seasons with Dallas, Bryant has averaged over 1,000 yards receiving, leading the league with 56 TDs. Last season, Bryant had 88 receptions for 1,320 yards and a league-leading 16 touchdowns. The two-time Pro Bowler entered this process wishing to be nearer Calvin Johnson as the highest-paid receiver in football, and with a long-term deal. The Cowboys also wanted a "Cowboys For Life'' deal.
Both sides get their wish ... and a reason to cheer.
