DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Mavericks and forward Dirk Nowitzki have reached a deal to keep the star player with the club for 2-more years.

According to league sources, Dirk and the team have come to terms on a two-year deal valued at a possible $40 million.

Coming off a four-year deal in 2014 that paid him $20 million-plus per season, Nowitzki signed a three-year, $25 million deal but opted out after the second year. The initial idea behind that move by owner Mark Cuban was to give the Mavs flexibility to bolster the roster for his final few seasons. They signed Chandler Parsons and Wesley Matthews. They nearly signed DeAndre Jordan. But they could never get the big free agent.

Nowitzki was chosen as the ninth pick in the 1998 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and immediately traded to the Mavericks, where he has played since.
