DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - After a year with an interim coach, Baylor University has their eyes on a Texas native to lead their program.
According to sources close to ESPN's Mark Schlabach, Baylor is expected to make a run at California head coach Sonny Dykes, after SMU's Chad Morris elected to remain with the Mustangs.
Dykes, a native of Big Spring, Texas, is the son of legendary Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes. The younger Dykes played baseball at Tech from 1989 to 1993 before focusing his attention solely on football. He eventually coached at Texas Tech from 2000 to 2006 (WR 2000-06, Co/OC 2004-06).
Dykes' Cal Bears went 5-7 this past season. He has a record of 19-30 in his four seasons at the school.
Interim head coach Jim Grobe has already told Baylor administrators that he doesn't want to be a candidate for the opening. The former Wake Forest coach took over for the ousted Art Briles in May, following an independent investigation by the law firm Pepper Hamilton, which said the university mishandled sexual assault allegations involving students and football players.
Baylor is 6-5 this season and will head to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers on Saturday.
