Report: AJ Pierzynski, Red Sox Agree To Deal
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski has agreed to a deal with the Boston Red Sox, CBS Sports Jon Heyman reports. The terms of the deal were not immediately available.
Pierzynski spent 2013 with Texas, starting at catcher in 111 games while batting .272 with 17 homeruns and 70 RBIs. He also started 13 gaes as the Rangers' designated hitter.
The 36-year-old Pierzynski was involved in a well-publicized dispute with pitcher Yu Darvish during a game on Sept. 4. The two engaged in a verbal altercation on the mound in an 11-4 loss to Oakland.
Catcher Geovany Soto became the personal catcher for Darvish for the remainder of the season. Soto remains the lone catcher with big league experience on the Rangers' 40-man roster.
General Manager Jon Daniels insists that the club is comfortable moving forward with Soto as the team's starting catcher.
Pierzynski signed a one-year deal with the Rangers prior to the 2013 season. He was named the recipient of the 2013 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award by the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America on Monday.
