Relative Stabbed By 11-Year-Old Girl In Stable Condition

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Police say an 11-year-old child stabbed a female relative nine times Friday night, causing the woman serious injury.

Police got the call from the apartment on Villagefair in the Redbird neighborhood of Dallas around 4 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found a woman and child both covered in blood.

Dallas Police won't specify the relationship between the woman and child, because she is a juvenile.

However, neighbors say the victim, 41-year-old Toshia Edmonson, is a single mother of two.

"It's a sad situation all the way around. I pray that she'd be okay," said neighbor Dorothy Hawkins.

Edmonson is currently at Methodist Hospital in stable condition.  Friends say she had to undergo eye surgery and suffered lung damage, among other injuries in the stabbing.

According to the police report, the girl was dropped off at Edmonson's apartment, around 11:45 Friday night.  She was angry she had to come home, the girl told police.

The child said Edmonson told her she was giving her away, and started shoving her into the couch, according to the police report.

Later, when Edmonson was asleep, police say the girl went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife, then went into the room where Edmonson was sleeping and stabbed her relative, a total of nine times because, the girl said, "she was so, so angry and frustrated with her."

Police say Edmonson was screaming the child's name to stop. Eventually, the woman took the knife away and fell on top of the child.

Another child in the home at the time ran into the breezeway crying, calling for help.

When neighbors and police arrived, they found Edmonson and the girl both covered in blood.

Police say the girl was crying for help, too.

Neighbors say it is totally unexpected for this family, especially the 11-year-old, who is known to be friendly and a good student in school.

"This was just devastating. Like I said, totally out of character for this to happen, because the kids are just lovely kids. Well mannered, and [Edmonson] just loves them to death. They're a great family," said Ben Ferrell, a friend of the family.

Ferrell says he spoke with a friend who is with Edmonson at the hospital today.  While she is recovering, he says she is also concerned about her family.

"This is so out of character because I've never seen them in any kind of crisis situation. They do things together. They're a tight-knit little family," Ferrell said.

A spokesperson for Child Protective Services says CPS has no record under this family's name, which indicates there may be no prior instance of family violence.

Dallas police have only been called to the home one other time, in 2012 for a vandalism report.
