Record-Setting Rains Flood North Texas, Video Included

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – North Texas woke up soaked on Wednesday.

Record-setting rainfall moved in overnight and continued well into the morning and afternoon, causing accidents, high-water rescues and road closures across the region.

CBS 11 meteorologist Jeff Jamison noted that Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport has recorded 3.53 inches of rain since midnight, drowning the previous record of 1.28 inches set on Jan. 25, 1973.

Here's a slideshow visualizing the rain's effect on North Texas.

Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Timothy Hardeman said emergency crews responded to six high water calls Wednesday, including two cases where multiple drivers had to be rescued.

One incident at Precinct Line Rd. and Trinity Blvd. took three units and involved five cars.

"Our dive team from Station 7 rescued a total of five people from their vehicles with a boat (water was waist deep)," Hardeman reported in an afternoon email. "No injuries were reported."

Those calls all took place between 3 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., records show.

CBS 11 photojournalists spread out quickly Wednesday morning to capture footage of how the heavy rain affected cities in our viewing area.

Here's a video captured in Fort Worth of numerous vehicles trapped in heavy flood water:

Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans reported that the department responded to eight high water rescue emergencies Wednesday.

The most serious of which happened on Park Central Drive near the LBJ Freeway. Evans said a woman driving a Chevy Yukon on the LBJ frontage road was trapped in high water from nearby White Rock Creek.

Water reached the top of the SUV, trapping her inside. Fire crews were able to save her, and she was taken to the hospital after hypothermia concerns. The frontage road remains closed Wednesday afternoon.

Here's video from a less-serious early-morning incident; note the ambulance slowly navigating through the high water:

In some areas, the rain was enough to keep drivers away from early-morning businesses. Watch in Lake Worth as a few brave residents stopped in at a Quick Trip:

Also in Tarrant County, CBS 11 photojournalists shot this footage of stalled cars in Haltom City. The one following it is an aerial view of much of the same from Chopper 11:

Chopper 11 also shot footage of a very active spillway at White Rock Lake following the drenching rains:

And in North Dallas, the heavy rains claimed a handful of cars that were parked on the street overnight:

Not far from that at the corner of Greenvile Ave. and Royal Ln., take a look at a flooded Harry Moss Park:

And, no footage of this, but at 8 a.m. Grapevine authorities had to close the eastbound off-ramp of State Highway 114 to State Highway 26 because of heavy water. Motorists had to use William D. Tate Ave. as an alternate route.
