Rash Of 3rd Row Seat Thefts Concern Police
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in University Park are warning residents about a rash of thefts from full-size SUVs.
Police say thieves have been stealing third-row seats from the vehicles and then putting them up for sale online and at flea markets.
The favorite target of thieves has been Chevrolet GMCs and Cadillac Escalades. In one weeks time police in the area have received reports of some 18 seat thefts.
The third-row seats are apparently very easy to remove so police are suggesting that sport utility vehicle owners take extra steps to keep their vehicles safe.
If the third-row seat isn't being used regularly police suggest that it simply be removed and stored.
If the seat is being utilized police suggest that owners secure it with a cable lock. Expert's say, while the cable can be cut it does offer another "layer of protection" and will slow a thief down.
Police also suggests that owners have their vehicle identification number (VIN) etched onto the seat row. In fact, University Park police are even offering the use of their electronic engraver if a resident doesn't have access to one.
Meanwhile, police are on the lookout for the thieves and ask that anyone with information about the crimes or the persons involved call 911 or contact the police department at (214) 363-3000.
