Rangers Washington Honored As Winningest Coach In Franchise History
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Though without a World Series title, there's little doubt that Ron Washington is among the greatest managers in franchise history.
Prior to Tuesday's rain-delayed game against Milwaukee, the Rangers honored Washington, who recorded career win no. 582 on Aug. 4 in Oakland, surpassing Bobby Valentine as the winningest manager in team history.
Washington was joined on field and presented with a framed jersey and commemorative lineup card by Nolan Ryan, Jon Daniels and a group of Texas coaches -- past and present.
Washington, 61, became the 17th manager in club history following the 2006 season and is signed through 2014. His career .540 winning percentage (589-502) is the best ever by a Rangers manager with a minimum of two full seasons.
Here's a look at a number of other accomplishments Washington has achieved in his now seventh year with the club:
- Washington is the only manager to take Texas to the World Series.
- Under Washington, the Rangers have reached the post-season in three consecutive seasons – a club record.
- Only five managers have longer tenures with their current clubs: Mike Scioscia (Angels, 2000), Ron Gardenhire (Twins, 2002), Charlie Manuel (Phillies, 2005), Jim Leyland (Tigers, 2006), and Joe Maddon (Rays, 2006).
- Washington is 18-16 in 34 postseason games as a manager.
- Washington is the first manager in major league history (1876-2012) to increase his team's win total in four straight years after his initial season with a club.
- Though he has never won the award, he has placed in A.L. Manager of the Year voting for four consecutive seasons: 2009 (T4th), 2010 (2nd), 2011 (3rd), and 2012 (6th).
- He became the first Rangers manager ever to serve as the manager in the All-Star game, doing so in 2011 and 2012.
