Rangers Sign RHP McClellan To Minor-League Deal
ARLINGTON (CBS SPORTS) - The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that the team has signed right-handed pitcher Kyle McClellan to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training.
McClellan, 28, has spent his entire professional career in the Cardinals organization, compiling a 19-23 record and a 3.69 ERA in 261 appearances from 2008-2012.
In 2012, McClellan made 16 relief appearances, including a 0-1 record with a 5.30 ERA. He was placed on the disabled list on May 18 and never returned.
On July 10, he had surgery on his right elbow and shoulder. St. Louis placed him on unconditional release waivers in November. The team expects him to be ready for the start of spring training.
Though he has pitched primarily in relief, McClellan made 17 starts in 2011 going 6-6 with a 4.21 ERA, the only starts of his major league career. He was not on the Cardinals' World Series roster in 2011 against the Rangers.
Out of the bullpen, he made at least 60 appearances each year from 2008-10.
McClellan was selected by St. Louis in the 25th round of the 2002 amateur draft.
With McClellan, the Rangers now have 57 players on the spring training roster: a full 40-man roster and 17 non-roster invites.
