Rangers Sign 1B Carlos Pena To Minor League Contract
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Texas Rangers have signed former All-Star first baseman Carlos Pena to a minor league contract, the team announced on Tuesday.
Pena has been assigned to the AAA-Round Rock Express and will be active within the next 48 hours.
Pena, who started his MLB career with the Texas Rangers in 2001, has hit 285 career homeruns with 8 different clubs over 14 seasons.
The left-handed hitter last played for Houston and Kansas City in 2013, appearing in 89 games, hitting .207 with 8 home runs and 25 RBIs.
Pena went to Spring Training with the Los Angeles Angels, but was released in March after hitting .139 (5-26) with no homers and 2 RBI in 20 spring games
The Dominican-American enjoyed his best season in 2007, when he was named Comeback Player of the Year after batting .282 and hitting 46 homeruns. He was an AL All-Star in 2009.
Brad Snyder and Donnie Murphy have platooned at first base for the club, which has lost first baseman Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland to injuries.
Fielder, who underwent neck surgery in late May, will likely be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Moreland is expected to miss significant time with an ankle injury.
