Rangers Re-Sign Catcher Soto To One-Year Deal
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Texas Rangers have re-signed catcher Geovany Soto to a one-year deal, the team announced on Tuesday.
Financial terms of the deal were not released, per team policy. Reports place the value of the deal at $3.05 million, plus incentives.
Soto, who will turn 31 in January, worked primarily as Texas' backup to AJ Pierzynski in 2013, starting 49 games at catcher.
In 54 games, the 2008 NL Rookie of the Year batted .245 with 9 homeruns and 22 RBIs. He threw out 10 of 34 (29.4%) attempted base stealers, the sixth-best percentage among AL catchers with at least 30 attempts.
Soto became the personal catcher for starter Yu Darvish over the last month of the season, after Darvish and Pierzynski were involved in a heated exchange on the mound.
Texas originally acquired Soto in a July 31, 2012 trade with the Chicago Cubs.
With the signing, the Rangers currently have 35 players on the club's 40-man roster.
