Rangers Notebook: Adduci's Dark Recovery, Rios' Season Over?

By Adam Crouch

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -- Outfielder Jim Adduci has been recovering from a concussion since tripping over Rougned Odor and slamming his head to the ground two weeks back.

The recovery has been a long and slow one after Adduci was placed on the 7-day concussion DL.

The 29-year-old has had to minimize activity -- especially in the days following the injury -- to an extreme level.

"I'd go back to my room. It would be dark. No reading, no TV. Everything was kind of minimal," said Adduci on Friday.

Manager Tim Bogar says that Adduci completed a cardiovascular work out on Friday, which "went ok". But Bogar doesn't expect him to travel on the team's upcoming 6-game West coast swing against the Angels and A's.

Alex Rios done for the season?

"I don't know. That's a tough call," said Rios prior to Friday's game. "Depending on how I feel, I will make a decision on that issue."

After bruising his right thumb, doctors made an incision in the hand to clean it out and prevent an infection. Rios is scheduled to get the suture removed from his hand on Friday.

However, the outfielder wants to take things slow to prevent a setback and possible infection.

"I would have to do certain things before I start swinging a bat. I want the incision to be completely healed before I start doing activities."

Bogar is unsure if Rios will travel with the team, but did express his desperation for an extra outfielder.

"I'd like him to make the trip. If he feels good and he takes batting practice, I d like to have him out there. Alex needs to make sure its 100 percent. I'm not going to push him on it."

Rios hasn't played since Sept. 4.

Scott Baker scratched

Saturday's scheduled starter Scott Baker has been scratched with tendinitis in his right tricep.

The team plans to skip Baker in the rotation and reevaluate at a later date.

"There's no real plan after today with him other than try to get his tricep healthy," said Bogar.

Bogar believes it's reasonable to attribute Baker's soreness to an increased workload this year.

"He only threw 43 innings last year, and he's up to 114 this year. There's going to be a little more wear on that...It's only common for their arms to get a little sore and stiff."

Baker has started seven games this season, going 3-4 with a 5.52 ERA.

Bonilla to make first MLB start

24-year-old Lisalverto Bonilla will start in Baker's spot and make his first major league start.

Bonilla has appeared in two games in relief with Texas, allowing 3 earned runs in 3.2 IP. He was called up on Sept. 2 from Round Rock, where he was 4-2 with a 4.10 ERA in 39 games.

Bogar expects Bonilla to throw a maximum of 75 pitches, hopefully carrying the team through three to five innings.

"He's got to throw strikes, get ahead. Hopefully he can use that great changeup to do some damage."
