Rangers Hire 5-Time All-Star Fernandez As Assistant

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Five-time All-Star shortstop Tony Fernandez is joining the Texas Rangers organization as Special Assistant to General Manager Jon Daniels. "His work ethic and performance on the field are matched only by his grace and commitment to the community," Daniels said in a statement. "He'll be able to help our players in a number of ways."

In a press release, the club announced that Fernandez, 49, will be in uniform during spring training and assist the team throughout the season.

A four-time Gold Glove winner with the Toronto Blue Jays, Fernandez spent 17 seasons in the major leagues. He has earned several degrees in ministry school and is an ordained minister.
