Rangers Fans Say Cruz Got What He Deserves
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Rangers fans who spoke with CBS 11's Joel Thomas were unanimous in their opinions; as much as it hurts the team, Nelson Cruz's fifty game suspension is exactly what he deserves.
"I think that it's good to send that message that if you don't play by the rules there are things that can happen like this and there are consequences," said Stasia Bandy, a Rangers fan who was visiting the gift shop at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. "I know we'll all hate to see him gone for the next 50 games or so but I think you have to play by the rules."
"He's been a wonderful player for us and we love the rangers but with the issue of steroids they have to take a stand somewhere," said Caroline Hill, a Rangers fan dining at the sports bar/restaurant Boomerjack's in Arlington. "Unfortunately it was Nellie."
Cruz is responsible for around 20 percent of the rangers run production. He's also the number four home run hitter in all of baseball. That is a lot of offense to lose during a playoff race.
"It's sad to see him go," said Cole Bandy, a young Rangers fan who plays baseball in a youth league. "But I hope we can find someone better so we can go to the playoffs."
"I think they've got enough talent on the team to overcome that," said fan Keith Hodges. "I mean, its going to hurt them but I think they've got enough to overcome it.
Fans agree Cruz's suspension hurts the team and damages the game's reputation. So surely you wouldn't want to sign him again when his contract is up at the end of the season, would you?
"If they can afford him, yes, they should," Hill said. "They should keep him. If they can do it they should keep him!"
"Sure!" Hodges exclaimed without hesitation "He's a good player. Great attitude in the clubhouse and he's a good player."
"We would love to see him back next year," Stasia Bandy said. "We're crossing our fingers. We're hoping."
