Rangers Announce Fielder Will Have Season Ending Neck Surgery
ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - During a conference on Thursday, Texas Rangers President of Baseball Operations/GM Jon Daniels announced that Prince Fielder will have season ending neck surgery next Tuesday.
Following an evaluation, the Rangers physician Dr. Drew Dossett recommended that he get cervical fusion surgery to deal with a herniated disk in his neck. The normal recovery time for that procedure is three to four months.
According to Daniels, the type of surgery that Fielder is expected to get has a high rate of success, and he expects Fielder to be 100 percent next season.
With Fielder out, this brings the total number of Rangers players on the DL to 14.
Fielder had played in 547 consecutive games, then the longest active streak in the majors, before receiving a nerve root block injection Saturday to treat his neck.
Texas acquired Fielder in November from Detroit in a trade for second baseman Ian Kinsler.
Fielder, who turned 30 earlier this month, had played all 162 games in four of the last five seasons.
