Ranger Of The Week: The Return Of Yu

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas Rangers are starting to resemble the team we all saw and cheered for at the start of the regular season.  In one week, the Rangers rattled off 6 straight wins.  They're 9-1 in the last 10 games and have won the last four series.

Texas starts a weekend series tonight against the Colorado Rockies with a 5 game lead in the A.L. West over the L.A. Angels.

With all the good vibes surrounding the team, there were plenty of Ranger Of The Week nominees chosen by the CBS 11 and 105.3 The Fan staff.

Matt Harrison continued his dominating performance from two weeks ago and got one vote, as did Colby Lewis.

Chris Arnold went with the skipper, Ron Washington saying, "He's been the glue.  It starts with him".

And RJ Choppy went with Ian Kinsler.

A rookie cracked the top 3 in this week's vote.  Justin Grimm's Major League Baseball debut gave the Rangers a much needed win.  Grimm went 6 innings and struck out 7 against Houston to earn his first win in the big leagues.

"For sheer guts and unexpected glory, I've got to go with Justin Grimm," wrote CBS 11's Joel Thomas.

"23 years old, gets a win on his MLB debut on national TV," said CBS 11 technical director Sam Jones.  Grimm received 3 votes from the staff to come in second for the week.

However, it was the big off-season acquisition that got the staff's attention.  Yu Darvish rebounded from some rocky starts and extra rest.  He went 2-0 in 2 starts during the last week.  He compiled 19 strikeouts and gave up 4 runs during 16 innings of work.

Yu got 7 votes from the staff to win Ranger Of The Week.

"He went deep in both games…protecting a bullpen riddled by injury," said CBS 11 sports photojournalist Bret Kelly.

And it wasn't just his pitching.  "Yu got his first major league hit," said CBS 11 Assignment Manager Mike Pool.  Darvish got a base hit during his start against San Diego going 1 for 3 from the plate.

And before we forget, let's give an honorable mention to the broomstick.  No, not Nelson Cruz's "boomstick".  The Rangers used the broomstick twice in the last week to sweep the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres.

Who will be the Ranger Of The Week next Friday?  The decision starts tonight when the Texas Rangers take on the Colorado Rockies on TXA 21's Friday Night Baseball starting with the pre-game show live from Rangers Ballpark at Arlington at 6:30 P.M.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 on TXA 21.
