BEDFORD (CBSDFW.COM) -  The Bedford Animal Control Division impounded a deceased skunk Monday which may have had contact with a resident's dog in the area of Cedar Grove Lane.

The skunk was sent to the Texas Department of State Health Services laboratory in Austin for testing and was confirmed positive for rabies.

In a news release, the Bedford Animal Control Division said it's reminding residents that anyone who has contact with wild animals should use caution. Also, carefully observe any pets that may have contact with wild animals. Residents are advised to always keep their pets under personal control and observation when out-of-doors.

Anyone observing any animal they suspect to be rabid should avoid contact. Common symptoms of rabies include, but are not limited to: lethargy, fever, vomiting, anorexia, full or partial paralysis, seizures, excessive salivation, aggression, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or other abnormal behavior.

Anyone believing they have observed or come in contact with an animal they believe may be rabid should contact the Bedford Police Department at 817-952-2127 or the Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Program at 512-776-7255.

Animal contact, such as bites or scratches, may lead to exposure to rabies. Infected animals can transmit the rabies virus prior to the onset of symptoms. Rabies presents a serious health risk to humans and pets. Rabies is always fatal if left untreated.

Vaccination of all cats and dogs is required by state law and is the first line of defense against human infection.

The City of Bedford urges every cat and dog owner to have their animals vaccinated and to keep vaccinations up to date.
