Questions Linger For Family Of Suspect Shot & Killed By DPD
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The family of Steven Douglas is struggling to understand how he died – in a confrontation with police.
His mother, Rene Douglas, told CBS 11 News, "He was coming straight here. He would have gave [sic] himself up. And, they killed my baby. They did, they killed my baby."
Rene said her son called her Monday morning to tell her he had his one-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter with him. She picked up the children and took them home with her, but worried her son might be in trouble.
"I called him [and he said], 'Mama I'm here. I'm here. I'm on the way to the house. The police are on me. I'm in a high-speed chase. I'm on my way home. I'll be there in just a minute… just wait on me. I'll be there.'"
According to police, Steven Douglas had tracked down his girlfriend earlier. They say he rammed her car, broke the window, and then pulled his children through it… at gunpoint.
A neighbor, who didn't want their name used for this story, told CBS 11 that she saw Steven with the kids. "He said he wasn't going back to the penitentiary. He was going to die. He said the police would have to chase him and kill him or he was gonna kill himself."
In order to find out exactly where Steven Douglas was, police say they tracked the GPS in his phone. The chase began when police located Douglas and tried to pull him over.
The chase ended when Douglas crashed into a van that had a woman and toddler inside.
Officers say he started to run from the scene, but turned back.
During a press conference Major Jeff Cotner, with the Dallas Police Department, said, "He turned and pointed a small caliber pistol directly at Officer Moreno. Moreno discharged his weapon, resulting in Douglas' death."
Douglas' family says that's not the man they remember or a story they can believe.
The suspect's grandfather, Roy McCarty, was visibly frustrated when CBS 11 tried to talk with him. "We're tired of it. We're tired of it," he said walking of yelling. "We're tired of it."
