Protective Order Against Bedford Stabbing Suspect Expired
BEDFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - The suspect in a double murder of a mother and her 8 year-old refused extradition from Oklahoma and will remain in an Oklahoma jail until Texas authorities obtain a warrant from Governor Rick Perry.
Cedric Ricks, 38, is the prime suspect in the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Roxann Sanchez, 30, and her eight-year-old son Anthony Reyes Figueroa. Ricks is also accused in the attempted murder of Sanchez's other son, who is 12 and has not been named by police.
In a chilling 911 call, the 12-year-old described seeing Ricks murder his mother and little brother. He told the operator, "My brother is not talking to me." When the operator asked if he was hurt, he responded "Everywhere."
Police found the 12-year-old still alive with several stab wounds to the back of the neck when they responded to the third floor apartment. He was transported to Cook Children's in Fort Worth, where he remains. His condition is unknown.
The older boys were not Ricks' children, but an 8-month-old infant fathered by Ricks was found in the home unharmed. That child is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
Sanchez's family arrived at the scene and were in utter shock.
"The mom was screaming. I mean you could hear from down here, 'No! She's not, she's not gone, she's not gone. I just talked to her at 6:30 tonight. She's not gone!' She was just really hysterical," said Sanchez's neighbor, Melissa Juarez.
Neighbors at the Bedford apartments where Sanchez lived said they heard screaming Wednesday night but they never dreamed two murders were taking place.
The arrest affidavit states one witness passed Ricks coming up the stairs as she was going down about 10 minutes before the 911 call.
Ricks' cousin later called police to report that he had confessed to the stabbings, telling her he was "hurt," "needed stitches," and was "cut up." He also told her he was "sorry," "stressed," "couldn't take it anymore," and that "nobody loves me," according to the arrest report.
Police traced the phone Ricks used to Oklahoma where they found him driving Sanchez's car.
Court records show Sanchez had filed an emergency protective order against Ricks in November. Ricks is alleged to have choked Sanchez. Ricks was no-billed on an injury to a child charge that was alleged to have happened the same night.
The protective order ordered Ricks to stay away from Sanchez's Bedford apartment, Spring Garden Elementary where the 8 and 12-year-old were 3rd and 6th graders, respectively, and also the children's grandmothers house. The protective order expired on January 15, 2013.
Sanchez was a medical assistant The Women's Group, an OB-GYN practice in Bedford. The employer sent the following statement:
"Our hearts are broken by the deaths of Roxann Sanchez and her son. She was a beloved member of our work family for more than a year. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones," said co-workers Linda Prentice, M.D., Stephanie R. Taylor, M.D., Emily Emmet, M.D.
